Domain availability checker
Type a name to see whether it is registered in 18 extensions at once. Each one is looked up in the registry's own record (RDAP), the source registrars rely on before they sell, so a free result means nobody owns the name right now. Free names show the lowest first-year and renewal price with a Register button; taken ones link to what the name is worth.
Free, no sign-in. Checks .com, .net, .org, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .xyz, .me, .us, .tech, .store, .online, .site, .biz, .art, .gg. Typing a full domain (acme.shop) puts that extension first. Got a shortlist? Check up to 100 at once.
Four names, checked 3 November 2026
What the checker returned for four kinds of name. A dictionary word is gone almost everywhere; a coined word can be too, because people who invent a brand often buy the whole set.
| Name | Free in | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| tidyfern | 17 of 18all but .com | An unusual two-word pair: taken only in .com. |
| quietharbor | 5 of 18.io, .ai, .us, .art, .gg | A plain two-word name: .com, .net, .org, .co and the cheap new extensions were all registered. |
| bakery | 4 of 18.tech, .store, .online, .site | A dictionary word: gone in every extension people ask for, free only in four that sell for about $2 to $7 the first year. |
| zentrova | 1 of 18.gg | A coined brand-style word, registered in 17 of 18 by someone who bought the set. Invented does not mean free. |
What each extension costs, and how often names are taken
Cheapest first year: .online ($1.96) and .site ($1.96). Cheapest to keep: .us ($7.00 a year), .com ($10.88 a year), .org ($11.64 a year). 8 of the 18 renew at double their first-year price or more, so compare the renewal column before you register.

Prices: the lowest standard (non-premium) quote from Dynadot and Porkbun, USD per year, as of October 24, 2026. Taken: the share of distinct names people checked on domhaul since August 4, 2026 that were already registered. People check names they hope are free, so it is the miss rate of hopeful guesses, not of every possible name. Each extension's page has its registrar quotes, five-year cost and registry facts; all domain prices.
How the check works
- Each domain goes to its registry's RDAP server: Verisign for .com and .net, Public Interest Registry for .org, Google Registry for .app and .dev, and so on. A record back means registered; not found means free.
- Five lookups run at a time. Any that fail wait three seconds and are retried two at a time; the last resort is the DNS, where a delegated name is registered and a missing one is not.
- A free answer is always fresh. A taken answer can come from our record of names found registered in the past 7 days, since a registered name almost never drops that fast. To see when a taken name runs out, use the domain expiration checker.
- No answer means the registry did not reply in time. It says nothing about the name; check again in a minute.
- Register starts checkout, which confirms the name with the registrar again and quotes the exact price before you pay.
Domain availability checker questions
How do I know if a domain name is available?
Ask the registry that runs its extension. Every generic extension and most country ones publish an RDAP server: a lookup for a registered name returns its record (registrar, dates, status), and a lookup for an unregistered one returns not found. This checker sends that lookup for your name in 18 extensions and reads the answers for you. A registrar's search box asks the registry the same question over EPP, the channel only registrars can use, and then wraps the answer in upsells and premium listings.
Is a domain free if no website loads at it?
No. A registered name can have no website, no DNS records at all, or a parking page, and a large share of registered names have nothing on them. Whether a site loads tells you about the owner's plans, not about ownership. Only the registry record says whether a name is taken, and that record is what this checker reads.
Why is a name free in .net or .co but taken in .com?
Each extension has its own registry and its own list, and owning a name in one gives no claim to it in another. .com is the most crowded by far. On 3 November 2026 tidyfern was taken only in .com and free in the other 17, while quietharbor was free only in .io, .ai, .us, .art and .gg.
Can someone register the name between my check and my purchase?
Yes. Registration is first come, first served, and a check is a snapshot of that moment. Free answers are never cached here: every check asks the registry again. Register starts checkout, which confirms the name with the registrar a second time before you pay, so you cannot be charged for a name that went in the meantime.
Why can a free name cost more than the price shown?
Registries set aside some short and dictionary names as premium and price them individually, from tens to thousands of dollars a year. RDAP only says whether a name is registered, not what it costs. The prices here are the standard ones for each extension; checkout quotes the exact price before you pay, and a premium name is handed to Namecheap, which shows its premium price.
