.org domain availability checker

Type a name to see whether its .org is registered, read live from Public Interest Registry's RDAP server. If it is taken, the same name is checked in 17 other extensions below it. A free .org costs from $7.98 the first year and $11.64 to renew, and anyone can register one, not only nonprofits. Two in three .org names people checked here (67%) were already registered.

Free, no sign-in. Free names show the price and a Register button; checkout confirms the name with the registrar again before you pay. Every extension at once: domain availability checker; mixed extensions in one list: bulk domain checker.

Time is from sending the check to the answer arriving, all six in one run. A taken answer can come from our record of names found registered in the past 7 days, which is why some known names answer fastest; a free answer is always asked of the registry.

.org availability questions

Do I need to be a nonprofit to register a .org?

No. .org has no eligibility rule: companies, clubs, open-source projects and individuals all register them, and no one checks what the site is for. The association with nonprofits is a convention, which is why many charities like it and some shoppers trust it.

Who runs .org?

Public Interest Registry, a nonprofit set up by the Internet Society, with Identity Digital as its technical operator. In 2020 ICANN refused to approve its sale to a private equity firm, so it is still run as a nonprofit. Its RDAP server is what this checker reads.

What does a .org cost after the first year?

$11.64 a year at Dynadot and $11.84 at Porkbun, after a first year of $7.99 and $7.98 (24 October 2026). Five years come to $54.55 at Dynadot, within a few cents of a .com ($54.40), so the cheaper first year is a discount, not a cheaper extension.

Is a .org name easier to get than a .com?

Somewhat. 67% of the .org names people checked on domhaul were registered (26 of 39, a small sample), against 75% for .com. Common words and causes are long gone in both; a name built for your project is often free in .org even when the .com is taken.
