Why a startup still needs the .com
Paul Graham made the case in 2015: a US startup without the .com of its own name should probably change the name, because not owning it signals weakness. Investors and enterprise buyers still read it that way. There is a practical cost too, since mistyped links and misaddressed email go to whoever owns the .com.
Startup names are the most crowded group we measured, so expect most of your favorites to be gone. Single dictionary words are nearly all registered or listed at premium prices. That leaves a two-word compound, a coined word, or a prefixed name such as get or use that you buy out later.
Clear the name before you incorporate
Most venture-backed US startups form as Delaware C-corporations. Delaware requires the corporate name to be distinguishable on the records of its Division of Corporations and to include a word such as Inc., Corporation, Company or Limited, and it will reserve a name for 120 days for a small fee. That settles the legal entity only. Founders who cannot get their first choice sometimes incorporate under a variant and trade under the product name, which works but adds paperwork at every bank and investor.
Trademark conflict is the risk that grows with you. Search the USPTO's free Trademark Search in the class you would file in: class 9 for downloadable software, class 42 for SaaS, class 36 for financial services, class 35 for marketplaces. Applications start at $350 per class, and an intent-to-use filing lets you claim a name before launch. A conflict found at seed stage costs a weekend. Found after a funding round, it costs a rebrand, new email addresses and the links you earned.
Names that survive a pivot
Early startups change what they sell more often than what they are called. A company named after invoices gets awkward the day it also runs payroll, so name the direction or the feeling rather than the current feature. Say the name on a call and ask the other person to type it; if you have to spell it, fix it now.
Before you commit, check the places developers and users will look for you: the npm or PyPI package, the GitHub organization, the X and LinkedIn handles. The App Store and Google Play both cap app names at 30 characters, so a long company name leaves no room for a descriptor.
Startup name questions
Are these startup names available?
They were on October 30, 2026: domhaul checked 212 name ideas for startups, AI startups and SaaS companies against the registry and 92 had no registration. The 40 listed here all had an open .com. A name can be registered by someone else at any moment, so press Check again to rerun the list live before you buy.
Should a startup use .ai or .io instead of .com?
As a launch address, yes, if your buyers are technical and the .com is out of reach. As a permanent home it is a trade-off: both renew at several times the price of .com every year, and non-technical customers will still type .com. Budget to buy the .com when you can afford it.
Do I need a trademark before I launch?
You do not need a registration to launch, but you do need the search. Check the USPTO's Trademark Search in your class before you announce the name. If it is clear, an intent-to-use application reserves your place in line while you build, and most founders file once the name is sticking.
How long should a startup name be?
Two or three syllables is the sweet spot: short enough to survive a pitch call and a login URL like app.yourname.com, long enough to still be open. Under 14 letters is a good target for the .com. Compounds of two short words are how most open names on this page were found.
How much does a startup domain cost?
A .com was $10.88 a year at the lowest standard price at Dynadot or Porkbun on October 24, 2026. domhaul's checkout adds a small service fee, and you see the exact total before you pay. One-word names listed on the aftermarket are a different market: four and five figures are normal, and the domain value calculator will tell you whether an asking price is sane.
