A website name is a domain first

For a website, the name and the address are one decision, so start with what the address allows. A .com label can run to 63 characters of letters, digits and hyphens, but that is a limit, not a goal. The name gets typed on phones, read aloud on calls and printed on cards, so aim for two words and under 15 letters. Skip hyphens, which people forget, and numbers, which nobody can tell from words when spoken.

Write the name in lower case with no spaces before you decide, because word boundaries vanish in a URL and two innocent words can spell a third. Avoid a doubled letter where the words meet, since that is where the typos land.

Pick the extension by who will type it

People assume .com. Someone who hears your name will try it first, so if another owner holds it you lose those visits and any email they guess at. If the .com is gone, pick the next extension for your audience: .io and .dev read as technical, .art suits a portfolio, .me suits a personal site, and .co works in print but gets corrected to .com in conversation. Compare renewal prices rather than the first-year price, because many extensions sell cheaply for twelve months and then renew at several times that.

Google picks the name it shows

Search results print a site name above your link, and Google chooses it from your home page, mainly your WebSite structured data and your title. It favors a short name used consistently across the site, so the logo, the title tag and the domain should all match. A long keyword phrase gives it nothing clean to use.

Registering a name does not give you rights to it

A domain registration is a paid contract, not ownership of the word. If your name is confusingly similar to someone's trademark, you have no legitimate interest in it and you registered it in bad faith, the owner can take it through a UDRP complaint, usually filed with WIPO, and US law allows damages for cybersquatting on top. Search the USPTO's free Trademark Search before you build, and keep other companies' brands out of the name even with extra words around them.

Then put the name in the Wayback Machine. A domain that is free today may have been used before, and you want to know what it hosted, since a spam history can follow a domain into search.

Website name questions

Are these website names available?

They were on October 30, 2026: domhaul checked 180 name ideas for web designers, photographers and marketing agencies against the registry and 130 had no registration. The 40 listed here all had an open .com. A name can be registered by someone else at any moment, so press Check again to rerun the list live before you buy.

What is the difference between a website name and a domain name?

The domain name is the address people type, such as northline.com. The website name is what you call the site in its logo and page titles. They should match, but they do not have to: you can show Northline Studio on a site that lives at northline.com.

How do I find out if a website name is taken?

Look it up in the registry. The generator on this page does that for every suggestion, and the WHOIS lookup shows who a taken name is registered through and when it expires. A name with no website can still be registered, so an empty page in your browser proves nothing.

Can I change my website name later?

Yes. Register the new domain, move the site, and set a 301 redirect from every old URL to its new home so search rankings and links carry over. Keep renewing the old domain for years, because links and saved email addresses keep pointing at it, and a lapsed domain can be picked up by anyone.

How much does a website domain cost?

A .com was $10.88 a year at the lowest standard price at Dynadot or Porkbun on October 24, 2026. domhaul's checkout adds a small service fee, and you see the exact total before you pay. Hosting is a separate bill, and static sites can run on free tiers, so the domain is often the only fixed cost of a small site.
