Every platform sets its own naming limits
A store name has to work in more places than a website name does, and each one sets a limit. Etsy shop names must be 4 to 20 characters with no spaces or special characters, so anything longer cannot be your shop name at all. Instagram handles stop at 30 characters and TikTok's at 24. Amazon's Brand Registry needs a trademark that is registered or pending.
Card statements are tighter still: Stripe allows 22 characters for the statement descriptor, and a buyer who does not recognize the line on a statement may dispute the charge. A name under 15 letters fits everywhere, so you can use one name on the domain, the shop, the handles and the statement.
Register the name before you open
If you sell as a sole proprietor under anything but your own name, most US states require a DBA, also called a fictitious or assumed business name, filed with the county or state. Banks usually ask for it before they open an account in the store's name, and your sales tax permit should match it. An LLC gets its name from the state filing, which has to include LLC or a similar designator, though the storefront can drop it.
Trademark search comes next. Online retail is class 35, and what you sell has its own class, such as 25 for clothing or 4 for candles. Search both in the USPTO's free Trademark Search, then search the name on Etsy and Amazon. Marketplaces act on rights-holder complaints, and a report can pull your listings before you get to argue. Reselling a brand's products does not give you the right to put its name in yours, so keep the brands you stock out of the store name.
Name the store for what comes next
Most stores outgrow their first product. A shop named after one item gets awkward when you add a second line, so name the feeling, the customer or the place, and let your categories do the describing. Read the name off a shipping label at arm's length; if it is hard to read there, it will be hard to remember.
Customers typing from a package or a card will guess .com, so print the address exactly and own the .com if you can. If you launch on Shopify or Etsy, register the domain anyway and point it at the shop, so the name stays yours if you ever move.
Store name questions
Are these store names available?
They were on October 30, 2026: domhaul checked 298 name ideas for ecommerce stores, boutiques, dropshipping shops, t-shirt businesses and candle makers against the registry and 191 had no registration. The 40 listed here all had an open .com. A name can be registered by someone else at any moment, so press Check again to rerun the list live before you buy.
How long can an Etsy shop name be?
Etsy shop names run from 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces, punctuation or special characters, and the name cannot already be in use. Check it on Etsy before you register the domain, since a name that is free as a .com can still be taken as a shop.
Do I need a DBA for an online store?
In most US states, yes, if you trade under anything other than your legal name or your LLC's registered name. The filing is usually cheap and goes through your county or state. Banks and payment processors may ask for it, so do it before you open a business account.
Should my store use .store or .com?
Use .com if you can get it. Customers guess .com when they type from memory, and it costs the same every year. .store is a reasonable fallback for a retail brand, but budget for its renewal price rather than its first-year price, which is far lower.
How much does a store domain cost?
A .com was $10.88 a year at the lowest standard price at Dynadot or Porkbun on October 24, 2026. domhaul's checkout adds a small service fee, and you see the exact total before you pay. Watch for first-year deals on other extensions: .store sells for a few dollars and renews at more than ten times that.
