The .com is the first check, not the last

An open .com tells you nobody holds that web address. It says nothing about whether you can use the name as a business. Before you print cards or file paperwork, the name has to clear three more checks: your state's business register, the federal trademark register, and the way customers will actually search for you.

State rules for LLC and corporation names

In the US your legal name is set by the state where you form the company, and each state writes its own rules. Nearly all require an LLC's name to include a designator such as LLC, L.L.C. or Limited Liability Company, and a corporation's to include Inc., Corp. or a similar word. The name must be distinguishable from entities already on that state's records, so search the Secretary of State's business database first. Words such as bank, insurance and trust usually need a regulator's approval, and the name cannot suggest a government agency.

Many states let you reserve a name before you file, commonly for 60 to 120 days, which is worth the small fee if formation is weeks away. If you will trade under something other than your legal name, say Harbor Books LLC operating as Harbor, you file a DBA, also called an assumed or fictitious name, with the state or county.

A state filing is not a trademark check

A state will accept a name that duplicates nothing on its own list, including one that infringes a company three states away. Search the USPTO's free Trademark Search for the name and its close spellings in your line of work. The legal test is likelihood of confusion between similar names on related goods or services, so the same word can belong to two companies in unrelated trades. Federal registration is optional for a local business, and an application starts at $350 per class, but the search costs nothing and takes ten minutes.

Descriptive names against brandable names

Riverside Landscaping tells a customer what you do and where, but the USPTO refuses merely descriptive marks on its main register until they have earned recognition, and the name is hard to stretch when you add snow removal or a second county. A two-word compound like the ones listed here is easier to protect and far more likely to have an open .com. You lose nothing in local search by choosing one: Google Business Profile wants your real trading name with no added keywords, and the town and services belong in your profile and on your pages.

Business name questions

Are these business names available?

They were on October 30, 2026: domhaul checked 240 name ideas for consulting, cleaning, landscaping and accounting businesses against the registry and 163 had no registration. The 40 listed here all had an open .com. A name can be registered by someone else at any moment, so press Check again to rerun the list live before you buy.

Does an open .com mean I can use the business name?

No. It only means nobody has registered that web address. The name also has to be distinguishable on your state's business register, and you should search the USPTO's Trademark Search for similar names in your line of work. These are three separate systems and none of them checks the others.

Does my domain have to match my LLC name?

No. Your LLC can hold one legal name while your website and signs use another. If customers see a name other than the legal one, most states want a DBA on file. Leave LLC out of the domain either way: it adds letters and nobody types it.

Is this business name generator free?

Yes. Generating names and checking them is free, with no signup and no limit on searches. You only pay if you register a domain, and your card is charged only if the registration succeeds.

How much does a business domain cost?

A .com was $10.88 a year at the lowest standard price at Dynadot or Porkbun on October 24, 2026. domhaul's checkout adds a small service fee, and you see the exact total before you pay. That covers the domain only: state filing fees for an LLC or a DBA are separate and set by your state.
