Domain Expiration Checker

Type a domain to see the exact date its registration expires and how many days are left, live from the registry. A passed date does not make the name free: a .com or other gTLD goes through up to 45 days of auto-renew grace, a 30-day redemption period and 5 days of pending delete, about 80 days in all, before anyone else can register it. The date is public but the owner's auto-renew setting is not, so a date a few weeks away does not mean the name is about to drop.

Free, no sign-in, 20 lookups a minute. Subdomains and URLs are reduced to the registered name (mail.google.com is looked up as google.com). Same lookup as the WHOIS lookup and Domain age checker.

What happens after a domain expires

The gTLD timeline (.com, .net, .org, .app, .xyz and every other generic extension). Registrars can move faster inside each window, never slower. The full story, with what each step costs, is in what happens when a domain name expires.

For at least 8 of these days the registrar must stop the name resolving, so the site goes dark or shows a parking page. Many registrars auction the name in this window.

What a lookup returns, extension by extension

We looked up one registered name in each of 15 extensions on October 28, 2026, once each with no cache. All 15 answered over RDAP, in a median of 257 ms. Five of them (.io, .co, .me, .us, .de) are missing from IANA's RDAP directory, which most RDAP clients rely on, so this tool asks those registries directly. 14 of 15 returned the registrar and both dates; DENIC (.de) returned only the registration, status and nameservers. A random unregistered name read as free in 15 of 15.

ms is the full lookup from a US connection, including the follow-up to the registrar's own RDAP server where the registry points to one. .uk and .in were the slowest.

Domain Expiration Checker questions

Why does an expired domain show an expiry date next year?

When a gTLD name reaches its expiry date, the registry renews it for a year automatically and gives the registrar 45 days to delete it for a refund. The public date jumps forward a year even if the owner never paid. The autoRenewPeriod status is the giveaway.

When will an expired domain become available?

For gTLDs, the earliest is about 80 days after the expiry date: up to 45 days of grace, 30 of redemption and 5 of pending delete. Many never get there. Owners renew late, and registrars auction expired names with traffic or value during the grace period, so the name changes hands without ever dropping.

What happens to my website and email when my domain expires?

The registrar points the name at its own parking page or stops it resolving, so the site goes offline and email to the domain bounces. ICANN's expired registration policy requires at least 8 days of interrupted DNS during the grace period, to make sure the owner notices. Renewing at the normal price brings everything back, usually within hours.

Can someone else renew a domain that is about to expire?

No. Only the registrant can renew, through their registrar. Anyone else can only wait for it to drop, place a backorder with a drop-catch service, bid if the registrar auctions it, or make the owner an offer before it expires.

Do .uk, .de and other country domains follow the same timeline?

No. The 45, 30 and 5 day windows are ICANN rules for gTLDs. Each country registry sets its own schedule, and some publish no expiry date at all: DENIC's answer for google.de had none. For a country code, check the registry's own renewal policy.
