Bluesky Username Checker
Type a name and this asks Bluesky's public API whether name.bsky.social belongs to an account. A bsky.social handle is 3 to 18 characters of letters, numbers and hyphens, with no hyphen at the start or end. If yours is taken you can still be @yourname.com: on Bluesky any domain you own can be your handle.
Free, no sign-in. Checks name.bsky.social plus .com, .co, .me.
Bluesky username rules
- 3 to 18 characters before .bsky.social.
- Letters, numbers and hyphens. No underscores, dots or spaces.
- No hyphen at the start or end.
- Case is ignored: handles are lowercase.
A name that breaks these is reported as not allowed without asking Bluesky.
What taken and available mean on Bluesky
Your own domain can be your handle
A handle is a domain name, and bsky.social is just the default one. Own yourname.com and you can be @yourname.com, which nobody else can copy, verified by a DNS TXT record or a file on the site.
The handle is a pointer, the account is a DID
Every account has a permanent ID (a DID), and the handle only points at it. Owners can switch handles without losing followers or posts, so a taken name can free up when its owner moves to another. This checks who holds the name right now.
Available is a snapshot
Someone can take a name minutes after it shows available. Bluesky settles it when you create the account or change your handle.
The matching domain
On Bluesky a domain is more than a website: it can be the handle itself. @name.com is shorter than @name.bsky.social, proves the account is really yours, and stays yours if you move to another Bluesky server.
Bluesky username questions
How do I check if a Bluesky handle is available?
Type the part before .bsky.social in the box at the top of this page. domhaul asks Bluesky's public API whether the handle resolves to an account. No Bluesky account or sign-in needed.
What are the rules for a bsky.social handle?
3 to 18 characters of letters, numbers and hyphens before .bsky.social, with no hyphen at the start or end. Handles are lowercase, so YourName and yourname are the same.
How do I use my own domain as my Bluesky handle?
In Bluesky go to Settings, Account, Handle and choose I have my own domain. Add the TXT record it shows at _atproto.yourdomain.com in your DNS (or serve the file it gives you at /.well-known/atproto-did on your site), then verify. Your followers and posts carry over.
If I change my Bluesky handle, do I lose my followers?
No. The account is tied to a permanent DID, not the handle, so followers, posts and likes stay when the handle changes. The old bsky.social handle is no longer yours once you switch.
Does checking a username reserve it?
No. Nothing is held for you: the name is yours only once you sign up with it or rename your account. Answers here are cached for up to 24 hours, so a name someone claims in between can still turn out taken at signup.
